Founded in 2000, Antiphon have brought music to countless churches and venues large and small, to our own region and across the UK and Europe, under our director John Roper. In this concert to mark our 25th anniversary we are joined by an invited orchestra of strings and continuo, to bring you choral masterpieces from the 17th, 18th and 21st centuries.
Handel – Zadok the Priest
Gibbons – O Clap your Hands
Purcell – Ode for St Cecilia’s Day: Welcome to all the Pleasures
Ola Gjeilo – Sunrise Mass
Handel’s Zadok the Priest needs no introduction. Gibbons’ O Clap your Hands is one of his most exuberant church anthems, for 8-part unaccompanied choir. Purcell’s Welcome to all the Pleasures is a small scale, almost intimate ode celebrating a very 17th-century mix of mythology, rationalism and art in honour of an obscure Christian saint! Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass uses the framework and text of the traditional mass setting for a luminous exploration of spirituality.
